When I was searching for Tick Borne Diseases earlier this week… I found this Guide to Horse Diseases: Symptoms and Treatments.
I read the whole thing…
I figured some of you might want to read this and maybe print it out and put it somewhere handy… Especially for those times when the vet comes over and spews off all the acronyms of what your horse might have – or what tests they need to do.
With this list, you could nod knowingly and then run inside to grab the cheat sheet…
Actually, all kidding aside, you should always ASK your vet what he plans to do and why.
Above all, Education is Key, so today I’m attaching this list I found on Greenhorn Horse Facts.
Here is the link to the article I’ve reprinted below.

Thanks for this – scary diseases. :-O
Re Cushings, my 30-year-old QH has Cushings, was tested yearly from age 25 and we caught it very early 2 years ago (he had started drinking and peeing more, and urine smelled sweet). As a result his blood sugar and insulin levels were high, the vet said he was “pre-diabetic.” Within four weeks of taking compounded Pergolide (now available as Prascend) his numbers were near normal, and a few weeks after that, completely normal. He is thankfully not also insulin resistant. He takes one pill a day and leads a happy and active life – sheds out a little later than non-Cushings horses, but has no fat pads, no cresty neck, no ribbiness, no curly coat, and has never had laminitis. The name of the game in this disease is the sooner you diagnose Cushings, the better the prognosis, so test older horses at least once a year. If it is caught early, horses often have 5 to 7 years of life left (I’ll be working into my 70s….but he’s worth it!).
