It has been a while since I’ve reported on Prisoner Trained Mustang Adoptions…
I adopted Rojo at the Carson City Prisoner Trained Mustang Facility a few years ago now. Wow how time flies! My goal was to have many miles on him by now so that he would be my new trail buddy.
But, Life struck. Just about exactly when I adopted him, I was diagnosed with Lyme Disease. And, soon after that, Tess foundered. So, everything changed. For now…
All that aside, I still think that Rojo is an incredible, beautiful and brilliant soul lording out there in his huge pasture. He is the Boss, for sure. The compact, little Mustang is the one in charge.
Anyway, I wanted to show you the newest crop of freshly trained and adopted Mustangs from the same prison where I found Rojo.
Remember, these horses are trained for 8 hours a day, 5 days a week for at least 4 months. That is a lot of time…
FROM MY POINT OF VIEW
I’ve been to several of these Prisoner Trained Mustang Adoption Days. And, I have been very impressed!
Yes, sure, there are the horses who seem ‘broken’. As if they never wanted to be caught, let alone ridden. And, I can understand that. It depends upon the individual horse and individual trainer.
But to me, most of the horses I saw in these programs were happy campers.
Considering that they were already caught, removed from their freedom, and cramped into the concentration-camp type of holding facilities… at least they got to do something during their days!
And, the horses that are (carefully) chosen to participate at least have a chance at a life other than their horrible detainment prison in the BLM camps.
Probably the most important part of this program is the Director. Hank Curry is a longtime ranch boss and horse wrangler who has created this successful program and runs it very pragmatically and safely. He wants both the horses and the men to succeed.
I met him. He loaded Rojo into my trailer when I came back to pick him up after our adoption. Hank spent quite a bit of time with me, answering all of my probing questions. He was a very solid man. He’s got a tough job, but he wants to do it for the horses and for these men, but mainly (I think) for the horses…

A BLM holding facility… so sad. If this is their fate, I’d rather they have an opportunity to be trained and adopted.
