YEP! I’M BAKING!
I’m baking horsey brownies: Skode’s Minty Rose Brownies.
Why bake when I can buy them already baked?
Well, because I like to hide Slick and Norma’s meds in them. So, if I bake them myself, I can control the consistency. I can make them soft and chewy (and pill-hideable). Also, I like to freeze portioned baggies of my horse cookies so they stay fresh and I can use just a few at a time. If I bake them, I can freeze them even faster so I always have fresh brownies.
Actually… have you ever eaten a Skode’s organic horse cookie?
Horses love them but…
Ugh. Yes, all the ingredients are human grade and organic but Ptooey. Organic Smorganic…
Still, the horses (and dogs/cats) love them.
WHAT’S SKODE’S HORSE TREATS?
Although she knew a fair amount about nutrition and organic herbs, she joined with several known equine vets, nurtitionists and herbalists including Dr. Eleanor Kellon, D.V.M, equine nutritionist and expert in the field of Insulin Resistance and Cushings.

Anyway, I’ve fed Skode’s glorious cookies (Apple Pie, Banana Hugs, Carrot Snips, Coconut Macs, Ginger Snaps…) salt squares, mashes, trail treats, bars and brownies for a while now… The horses looooove them.
This time, I ordered a bunch of different treats. I wanted some energy cookies for the trail bag and I wanted some salt squares for summer. I got some smaller cookies for little treats and then herbal mashes for bigger healthy reward treats after a workout.
I also purchased a bag of Minty Rose brownie mix that I could make on my own.
So, that’s what I’m doing.
THE BAKING PROCESS
I opened the ziplock bag.
Inside were instructions.
–I needed to steep the rosehips in 3 cups of water (I added a bit more to make them chewy).
–Then, I folded the rose hips into the dry ingredients in the bag.
–I sprayed my pan with vegetable oil and smashed in my masterpiece.
Note: The dough is really really really sticky. I was afraid it would never come off my hands. Yes, I did knead the dough. Easier. But getting it off was intense. Gooey sticky and probably very delightful if I was a horse and able to lick it off. I swear, I was thinking of getting out the power washer.
–OK, then the instructions said that if you wanted to get all Martha Stewart, you could add lemon rind – push the cut up rinds into the top of the brownies.
–I did that.

–Pop the pan into the 350 oven for an hour.
The house kinda smells like I’m cooking vegetable granola… not really appetizing but not bad.
I already know that my horses love the pre-baked version of the Minty Rose brownie because I have purchased them previously.
While I waited for these to cool, I got impatient and cut out a corner to feed to the nearest horse – it was getting dark and I knew I only had a few minutes to take a picture.
So, I ran out to Norma (blowing on the brownie to cool it and waving it in the evening air…) who came running over. I think she could smell the wonderfulness wafting from the oven vent!
Norma ran over using her excited donkey boingy stiff trot. I barely got the brownie out of my grip before she nabbed it – Poof!
I missed the photo.
But, she is chewing it with vigor and nodding her head in this photo – so you can see that she is eating it happily.
I think these homemade horsey treats from Skolde’s (made by me) will be a big hit around here tomorrow!!
