I went to the market today and saw this! Tied to a twig of a tree in the parking lot, next to the Chevy’s restaurant. I’m guessing their rider was inside.
Does anyone know who these horses are and how they came to be parked in an auto parking lot in Auburn, CA? I looked for BLM brands or any other kind of specific markings but I couldn’t see much. There were no signs of sponsors or promotional stickers…
They were mostly dozing and I didn’t want to get too close in case a car was coming nearby. (I saw a lady drive around them with only 2 inches to spare! Humans can be so clueless sometimes!)
I would love to know the story!
— I didn’t think it was right to walk into the restaurant and bug somebody who probably needed to sit and relax… But I was sorely tempted to know this story!)

I parked and saw these two horses tied to a tiny twig of a tree outside of a Chevy’s Restaurant in Auburn, CA. There are many cars in this parking lot and lots of activity… and it is right off of a highway. I have no idea how these horses were RIDDEN here!

Sarahkate, how horrible for those Belgians! That guy should have been stopped a long time ago. Where is animal control when you need them? I hope lots of locals have called them and the sheriff, and gotten those horses the vet care they need.
I don’t have a clue who those traveling horses are, but I’d also check LRG under “Current Expeditions.” I’m going to share this on FB, surely someone out there will know who this Long Rider is!
One of them looks like one of Doc Mishler’s horses (he started out with three). But, Doc must be 78 or 79 by now? Maybe? I thought he hung up his spurs two years ago.
Good resource to check for current expeditions is on the Long Riders Guild website, but not everyone alerts LRG to their travels.
Watch for a particularly unpleasant situation – there’s a guy still driving a team of Belgians to a replica covered wagon, he goes all over the west, no visible means of support except panhandling, he had a website but it got taken down probably because he got stopped so many times by concerned horsemen and law enforcement. He made a stop in western Oregon a while back. His horses were very hungry and very lame. He was shilling for feed at a Coastal Farm store in western Oregon. He himself was an absolutely fatty so he was feeding his own face before he was feeding his poor drafties. I understand he is still on the road, moving on when he gets in trouble for poor condition of his horses.
