I discovered this article from Popular Science explaining why zebras have stripes. Research conducted at UC Davis has shown that the striped pattern greatly diminishes the number of flies that successfully land on the animals, though the same number still try but largely do not succeed. They also put a zebra-striped blanket on a horse and it worked too! The reason is partially explained in the article.
