A reader sent this article to me and I was astounded and thrilled to find another skill for horse and rider: Equine Air Scenting.
EQUINE AIR SCENTING!
They call it “the best kept secret in the horse world”…
Evidently, horses’ olfactory receptors rival those of a tracking dog. Horses naturally search out the most recent scent, the hottest human scent.
George Ehmer has an an 18 year-old Appy named Joker, who can sniff out a human hiding in a 13 acre wooded field in 2 minutes and 20 seconds.
If you google ‘Equine Scent Detection’ a few names will come up. One of those names will be Terry Nowacki who seems to be one of the leaders in this field and has written two books, “Air Scenting Horse” and , “Equine Language and Communication Journal.”
(I just ordered the Equine Language and Communications Journal.)
Very interesting and – yet again – another equine ability for you to enjoy with your horse!
HERE IS THE ARTICLE I WAS FORWARDED
I was going to explain all about Equine Air Scenting and then thought that I would just be re-inventing the wheel since this article says it so clearly. Thank you, Richard Cockle!

A LITTLE MORE ABOUT JOKER…
I did some research on Joker and found that he has been a participant in the America’s Favorite Trail Horse.
That horse is very well trained and seems to love what he does!
Here is George’s FB page.
Here is Joker’s FB page!
I’ve also included a video where George gives all the credit to Joker. Clearly, he loves this horse!
I wish I had the time, the horse and the know how to do this. SO MUCH FUN!
