135 Dogs Who Escaped Australian Fires Find Refuge With Kind Soldiers On Navy Ship

Thousands of families have lost their homes in the Australian bushfires over the past 3-4 months. Around New Year’s Day, many families in the coastal town of Mallacoota in Victoria were forced to evacuate their homes when the fire sirens went off.

After the emergency evacuation, some of the evacuees had trouble finding shelter due to their pets. In this unfortunate crisis, the local navy stepped up to offer the families their ship base as a temporary home for the distressed pets.

A total of 135 dogs, 2 cats, 2 birds and a rabbit were transferred to the sturdy ship called “HMAS Choules”. The officers even built makeshift kennels to shelter these pets and are working 24/7 to look after them. The ship is very much like a professional floating daycare facility for dogs!

As of now, many families have also boarded HMAS Choules and are waiting to be transported to safety. The ship is filled with heart-wrenching stories of loss, ruin, and lives that will never be the same again. If you wish to support the animal rescues in Australia, you can visit the Wildlife Emergency Fund page here. Let’s do our bit and help those struggling in the aftermath of the bushfires! Also, a big salute to these selfless officers!
