ETHEL MERDONK let us do her feet!

Ethel Merdonk came to us recently from a kill pen in Texas.  She was very afraid of people and hated HATED H.A.T.E.D. the farrier, or any idea of the farrier… or vet for that matter… anyone.  She didn’t like anyone.  No one.

So… I’ve been working with her for a while now.  She tolerates me at first, and then she lets me pet her if I have treats.  Once she forgets herself, she will lean into me and moan.   This girl has a very big wall – yet she loves and wants attention.

The problem was her feet.  They were long when she got here, and they are even longer now.  Because she is so guarded, she would not let me near her legs or feet.

To me, I knew she had had her feet done.  Ethel is older.  She’s been around a long time.  Clearly, she’s had her feet done in the past.  So I knew she knew about feet trimming.  The problem was getting her to admit it.

I figured if I petted her and then ran my hands down her legs, eventually she would let down her guard and lift a foot.  As soon as she did that, I’d know that she knew and the gig was up.

And, a few weeks ago, she flinched.  She lifted her foot when I ran my hand down her leg.

Gotcha!

So I knew.  I knew she knew, and she knew that I knew that she knew.

Finally.

I called Fernando and set up an appointment because I felt confident with treats and a halter, she would succumb and let us trim her.

And I was right.

Success.  Finally.  I am so relieved.

Ethel Merdonk Wonky Donkey can puff herself up and be very threatening.  But now we all know that she’s a softie inside.

Phew!

She’s not happy about this at all… you can see all of the grey hairs on her forehead.  She is an older gal.

She smells the cookie bribe… (note all the scars on her nose)

Here she is eating the cookie bribe… while Fernando works

Resigning herself.

Here we are praying that she doesn’t kick Fernando… and she didn’t.

A beautiful sight… the fronts done.

All done! Her feet aren’t exactly conformationally even – so we left some foot for next time because we wanted to make sure she was comfortable after this initial trim. MUCH BETTER.

Here she is this evening… looking shorter but much happier. No issues with the trim. She is a happy camper.

I’m back from vacation, how about YOU GO ON A VACATION?! I saw this… only a few spots left! BLUE SKY SAGE ADVENTURES for “Horsewomen of a Certain Age” (riding Wyoming’s back country on trained horses!)

Doesn’t this sound GREAT?!  I happened upon Blue Sky Sage Adventures and found they are centered on women’s horseback retreats in Wyoming.  How fun!  I just came back from my vacation in Wyoming at the R Lazy S Ranch.  It was outstanding!  So, I’m fairly certain you’d have the same gorgeous scenery with this highly rated company.

THE HORSEWOMAN OF A CERTAIN AGE RIDE….

What I really found exciting was the “Horsewoman of a Certain Age” ride.  It is 7 days.  They provide the trained horses, fabulous wilderness rides through glorious country, meals, camp accommodations and lovely nights under the stars.  And, since these rides are titled, “Horsewoman of a Certain Age”, I know they are going to assuage any fears you might have about it all.

THERE ARE ONLY 4 SPOTS LEFT for the entire summer, so click here to look at the calendar.

From the website.

Who are we? The women I know who are on the horsemanship journey are from a wide age range, are from all walks of life, reside in countries all over the world, and they have the common bond of the horse as a major fixture in their life. For you women, Blue Sky Sage exists. This is a place to continue your horsemanship journey, at whatever fork in the trail you are at right now. If you are ready to move forward, then we invite you to join us for a time of growth, confidence-building, and fun.

While Blue Sky Sage has been a leader in women-only horseback riding vacations for over 22 years, during that time the desire by our lady guests to delve into more horsemanship instruction and hands-on practice has evolved. Now, with our own “coming to a certain age” we want to offer more of our knowledge and experience to women who are on the journey, on a exclusive horsemanship retreat. These weeks of discovery will be not only about instruction and learning, but they will offer you the opportunity to retreat from your day-to-day life, and reconnect with your spirit in the “off the grid” comfort of a setting that has all you need to be cared for in a simple, natural place with no distractions from the “outside” world.

These weeks are all about horses and riding, in a supportive, non-judging environment. We’ll cover everything from safety on the ground and in the saddle, to overcoming fear, building up your body and mind, and everything in between. You will actually take the lessons into the field on the best teachers, which are the good, open-range saddle horses you will ride – they will offer themselves up to help you figure out whatever it is you may need to figure out, and maybe even help you find something you want. There will be challenge, maybe a little frustration, and hopefully, an abundance of reward. Every week is hands-on, free-spirited horsemanship, with no fences and no “nose to tail” trail riding. We ride good horses, we have a lot of fun and no one ever leaves thinking they haven’t had enough time in the saddle. This is your invitation to join me and the Blue Sky Sage staff and horses to journey forward and open yourself up to discovery.

THE HORSES OF BLUE SKY SAGE

from the website:

For years, Blue Sky Sage has practiced and promoted a “native horse” philosophy, which is used continuously in our year ’round Horse operation. It provides a safe and effective environment for both humans and horses. This philosophy is a blending of the horsemanship methods of Ray Hunt and Buck Brannaman, as well as a good sprinkling of open range practices that we have developed and integrated into the riding program. This style of horsemanship creates a well-mannered, safe, willing and enjoyable trail horse and a willing and effective human riding partner. For mental preparation, we recommend you read any books by Ray Hunt, Tom and Bill Dorrance or Buck Brannaman.

Our saddle remuda is composed of Western-type horses. This includes ranch-type Quarter Horses, Quarter/Draft cross, ranch-type Paints, and a few mustangs. These horses are gentle, sound, intelligent and are not the stereotypical “dude horse.” They are all well-suited to the faster paced riding in rough country that our experienced riders engage in, yet quiet and gentle for the less vigorous pace appropriate for novice and intermediate skill level riders. There are no gaited horses used in this operation, as gaited horses are not commonly considered a Western-type horse.
