Just a brief update on Mama Tess: She explored the deep dirt today!
You see, I’ve had to restrict her walking around the ranch because the grass is just to lush right now. I do not want to exacerbate MT’s condition (founder) by letting her gorge herself on rich grass… So, recently, The Queen has been having to cool her heels inside the barn and on her Veranda.
Now, MT’s barn and Veranda are very nice and quite roomy. There is always a cool breeze, three windows, three stalls, a wide aisleway (her bedroom), a lovely Theraplate and plenty of sunshine and views on the Veranda.
However, this is NOT ENOUGH for the Queen. Having taken away her outside privileges, MT was pouty whenever she could show me his displeasure. She constantly stood by the door to go outside, giving me that punitive look as if to say, “Now is when I go outside… have you forgotten, little human?”
So, I had to improvise.
I decided to let the horses from the barn pasture out to graze and then lock them out… so that MT could go into their pasture and roam (MT would not be able to reach any grass).
UH OH, SHE WON’T COME BACK IN!
I’ll tell the story in pictures!

I had to feed all the mustangs and mares outside of their pasture because MT would not come back in – and she was in their pasture…

I called and called and told her that dinner was served… and she looked at me as if I had to be kidding – she was NOT going back in.

MT was too busy exploring the outside paddock. (That is her last foal, Wrigley, in the paddock next to her.
BACK IN DA HOUSE – LARGE AND IN CHARGE!
Again, I’ll tell the story in photos!

After a quick boot change (the Soft Rides don’t really fit her left – deformed – foot very well), MT goes behind my back and steals forbidden food from Sam. (Yes, Sam’s hoof is split. She is untouchable – no farrier. Soon that split will chip off as normal.)

So, she got onto her Theraplate so I’d give her some of her personal hay (pre-soaked). It worked. I turned on the Theraplate and gave her hay. (Yes, the Theraplate needs a sweep. This girl is on and off of it at least 5 times a day.)

As I was doing my chores, MT finished her hay and got off the Theraplate. She stood where the rest of her dinner should have been and glared at me. (I usually hang her dinner on this gate.)

When I didn’t jump to, she came to peer into the Feed Room to see what in the heck was holding me up in there…

Like a good and well-trained servant Human, I obediently put her dinner on the gate. She immediately turned around and dug in.

MT is a very messy and voracious eater. I wish you could hear how her appetite sounds… Anyway, she was a very happy girl – all day.
