As you know, I follow the Prisoner Trained Saddle Horse Program at the prison in Carson City, Nevada. I adopted Rojo from one of these events – I was very impressed with the training… and afterwards I spoke to the mentor there and he said that a large percentage of the men from this program, stay out of prison.
A win-win for both horse and man!
You can follow these horses and results at this FB page! (Wild about Prisoner Trained Mustangs)
HOW IT WORKS…
The prisoners are selected by their good record – training horses outside, 40 hours a week, is a great gig if you can get it.
The wild mustangs are selected by the Head Wrangler who has been doing this for a very long time. The Head Wrangler picks the geldings from the vast number of horses in the (very sad – I’ve seen them) holding pens.
The Head Wrangler matches the horse to the man and the games begin.
Basically, for 8 hours a day, 5 days a week, for 4 months… the men work with the horses. Not many horse trainers so that.
The horses are trained to saddle, all gaits, trailers, trail riding, desensitizing… whatever they can get done in 4 months.
