Yup, I have grown horses who pout…
I mean, I guess I shouldn’t be surprised that my grown horses pout considering Hubby pouts on occasion and I do, too, sometimes…
But I guess I think of horses as being too dignified to pout.
And some are.
For example, I’ve never, ever seen Rojo pout.
I’ve never seen Sam pout… or Beautiful Girl or Wrigley or Finn or Dodger or Norma or Bodhi or Gwen.
But… I’ve definitely got 3 pouters…
REMI THE DEMANDING POUTER.
I’m not actually sure if I can qualify what Remi does as pouting…
It is more of a DEMAND and if I don’t give in, she is totally insulted. And then she pouts. Perhaps it is a Mustang thing. It is as if she has asked and how dare I not provide since she is Lead Mare – and I’m … not.
Here’s how it usually goes… I go into the barn to do anything. Remi runs up to the back gate and starts kicking it.
Remi (running her teeth along the top bar of the metal gate): Hey!
Me: Hi, Remi!
Remi (kicking gate): Hey – Please give me food. Now.
Me: Nope, it isn’t food time… you can clean up the scraps from breakfast.
Remi (kicking the gate and staring right into my eyes): What? These LEFTOVERS? ARE YOU KIDDING ME? I’m the LEAD mare for horsesakes…
Me (ignoring her): La Lala La De Dah..
Remi (kicking the gate more furiously): HEY! I KNOW YOU HEAR ME.
Me (continuing with whatever I am doing): LA LALA LA DE DAH…
Remi (now furious that I am ignoring her ala Glenn Close and kicking with both front feet): YOU CAN’T IG-NORE ME!!!!!!
Me (trying not to get a migraine from the noise): THAT’S FINE, I’LL JUST WHISTLE AND SING LOUDER THAN YOU BANG.
Remi (beside herself with indignation): YOU WILL NOT! BANGITY BANG BANG BANGBANGBANGBANG!
And so it goes.
Her pouty face could be confused with ‘extremely insulted and indignant horse face’.

I KNOW YOU HEARD ME.

I CANNOT BELIEVE YOU ARE IG-NORING ME!

HERE, I’LL BANG AGAIN AND AGAIN – JUST IN CASE YOU DIDN’T HEAR ME!

(weeping quietly) I cannot believe you defied me … me, the Lead Mare!

The POUT.
PONY HYSTERIA POUT.
And then there is Slick.
He is one of my adorable, but slightly devilish Shetland ponies.
His pout repertoire consists of violent snaking of the neck, excessive shaking of the bangs, gnashing of teeth and tiny feet stomps.
I think his tantrums are based in his life-long frustration with being short.
Hence, he pouts a lot.
If he wasn’t short, his life would be so different.
He’s probably right. His life would be different if he was taller.
However, thank horsegods he is short because life would be intolerable if he were horse-sized… then again, maybe to Slick’s point, his life would be different if he was horse-sized.
Poor Slick. He pouts when any other horse gets anything that he didn’t get. His motto is if other horses get to go out, so does he – no matter whether he fights with them or not. If other horses get more food, so should he, no matter if he is a bit tubby. And, if any one else is getting any kind of care or affection, so should he.
And, to be honest, I agree.
So, I don’t mind when Slick pouts… he kinda has it rough, being small and all.
THE QUEEN DE POUTS.
Mama Tess is the winner here.
Everything she wants, she punctuates with, “I’m sick, I’ve been through a lot and I’ve worked really hard to get better so I deserve whatever I want.”
Instead of arguing with her, I try to have many choices of foods and treats that are OK for her to eat – that she likes. Tall order.
But, over the year, I have stockpiled an arsenal of MT treats – at the ready at all times. If she wants what the other horses are getting, I give her a bit of something special that is just for her. I always feed her first, I always give her a taste of what (she thinks) the other horses are getting and I always greet her first and say ‘good night’ last to Mama Tess.
If she pouts, I generally give in because she’s sick and has been through a lot and has worked really hard to get better so she deserves whatever she wants.
Well trained am I…
