Recently, I wrote about 100 horses that had been removed from a hoarding situation in Canada (linked here).
Slaughter is legal in Canada so these horses were very much at risk.
Well, as I am sitting here, doing my taxes, a lovely email popped up. It said:
Hi Dawn
RESULTS ARTICLE POSTED BELOW
The results are in following the Valley Auction in Armstrong, B.C. where close to 100 horses were auctioned off this afternoon.
As many of you read in our previous article, these horses belonged to Gary Roberts who faced animal cruelty charges back in December and had 16 of his horses seized. The B.C. SPCA then forced him to consign the remaining 100 members of his herd.
The fates of these horses had been so unsure these past couple weeks, but are now sealed for the better. Following posts on a Facebook group, the lowest price at the sale today was $350 for a small bay colt around 1-2 years of age with prices going up to $2600 for a mare named “Princess”.
With meat price on horses being between $0.20 and $0.40 cents a pound the equine community was fearful that these horses would be sold for kill. However, thanks to individuals spreading the word about this story and those people who bid at the sale (both in person and via phone), not a single one of the horses was sold for meat!
The total value of the horses sold today was over $81,000 and, while we are not happy about the proceeds going to Gary Roberts, we are thrilled that these horses got a second chance at life.
Members of the equine community truly stepped up to help today. Congratulations to all of those individuals who welcomed a new family member. We are looking forward to continuing to follow these horses and look forward to seeing updates of them in their new homes.
For anyone who is interested in the details of the sale, head over to the Armstrong Horses Sold Feb 07, 2015 group on Facebook.
