Alright, you are going to think I’ve really fallen off of my rocker this time.
OK, so I had nothing that I felt like writing about today… Usually, I have a stack of articles, pages I’ve torn out of magazines, various scattered photos or files on my desktop that all contain ideas for times just like this – when I’m stuck. I sort through these triggers until one ‘hits’ and feels exactly right for the topic of that particular day.
Well, my method didn’t work out so well for me today. I was just sitting here thinking that I didn’t feel like writing about anything that I have in front of me.
Drat. What to do, what to do…
And then it came to me… Paint by Numbers was whispered into my ear.
Me: Huh? That is a ridiculous idea.
Voice in my Head: Paint by Numbers, you know… what you used to do as a kid.
Me: But I was always horrible at those! I can’t paint. Besides, no one has thought about those for years.
VIMH: I know.
Me: So why should I write about that?
WIMH: Go to the computer and Google it. That’s all I’m gonna say…
Me (sighing): OK. I got nothin’ else… Might as well give it a try.
So, I did.
I Googled, “Paint by numbers horse” and to my huge surprise, this is what I found:
NEW AND IMPROVED PAINT BY NUMBERS! (No affiliation)
So nowadays, you can send in your own photo and they will send to you a kit to make a personal paint by numbers. That’s cool.
Yes, I know, that doesn’t make my painting ability any better – but at least the crappy painting I create will somewhat resemble a pet I love. All I have to do is figure out what photo to use…
1) The pet has to be front and center
2) The background shouldn’t be too busy
3) The lighting should be good
Well, I had very few photos with all of those qualities since I’m not that great of a photographer either. Anyway, I chose this one of Aladdin.
*For all of you who don’t know, Aladdin was my dearly departed, knighted, statue erected in the backyard, the best-ever trailhorse known to mankind in the history of the world – ever. He carried me around for 12 years and was rock solid as they come. I think… Except he hated Hubby, was spoiled rotten, acted like a hotsy Morgan whenever anyone else was around and had enough quirks to make others not want to ride with us. But to me, he was perfection.
As an aside, I also want to say that everyone should start taking photos of your pets now! I have very few of Aladdin and I am so sad about that. I guess I never really thought about it. But, now I regret not having a plethora of them the mull over and remember.

Here is the photo I've chosen of my Aladdin. This was before I started him in the LG bridle, in case you are wondering...
SEEMS SIMPLE ENOUGH
The directions were a bit too easy.
All you have to do is figure out the photo (which is probably the most difficult part) and upload it. Oh, and you have to decide what format you’d like (size and canvas vs. paper).
I’m thinking the Free Stylin’ Original since that seemed to be the easiest for a beginner like me. However, I did play with the idea of the Cartoon style since my painting will probably end up looking like a cartoon anyway. Hmmmm. Will this look like a bad Andy Warhol or just a bad regular painting?
I’LL BE THE GUINEA PIG.
OK, so I’ll do this thing and test it out for all of us.
The website says that this company has been featured in tons of magazines. The testimonial page proclaims many happy subscribers… I figure they all must be really talented or their bar isn’t that high. Dunno. I mean the fact that I drool over Teresa Elliott’s paintings kinda leaves me thinking that my own renditions are going to leave me a bit non-plussed.
But, I’m doing it anyway…
I’ll keep you posted. ;)

Wow, that is really neat! Can’t wait to see your results. :-)
Cool Dawn! I may try that on a Max and Lili picture! It actually sounds like fun (although, like you, I am artistically challenged!)
I use to LOVE paint by numbers as a kid. But they always looked pretty cruddy when I got done. And they really had not special meaning. I love this, that you can do a paint by number with a favored pet…..I really look forward to your review on this…Pretty neat! Oh and WONDERFUL TOPIC too!
I love this idea! I do not think you have fallen off your rocker! I am glad you found it because I am thinking of actually trying it too! Thanks!!!
