I’m this tall.

Thursday, December 31st, 2020 | Filed under Updates

During lockdown in California (my work is closed – ), I’ve decided to paint my single story house.

So far, so good.

A kind reader gave me a few hints about how to paint around bushes by using plywood to push back the bush (I used a flattened, large, cardboard box).  Thank you.  It worked great!

Anyway, I’m making my way around the house.  First I pressure washed it – well, I did that until our pressure washer broke – now I’m just using a hose and nozzle on ‘jet’.

As you can see… (hand motion)… I’m this tall.  Second round, I will use the ladder.

I had to trim around the roses and citrus trees. The hardest part was the area underneath the silver box on the wall.

The backside of the AirBnB portion of the house. You can see how tall I am.

The garage. The horizontal pieces are way easier to paint than the original vertical boards on the AirBnB part.

(It is Saturday night and I’m sitting at Starbucks writing to you all.  Our internet goes in this week…  Hubby is back in Grass Valley.  He needed to finish installing the new floors upstairs for our renters – whenever we get a renter.  And, Hubby agreed to feed for me, so that was very helpful.  Scouty is in Grass Valley, guarding the house, so she was very happy to see Hubby.  She loves him so much.)

So I’ve been at the new house for two days now, supervising the fence construction.

As a producer, let me tell you that I’ve been standing on my hands and biting my tongue for the entire time.  I’ve forced myself to not look out the window or try to understand why things are happening (or not happening) in the order I think they should be happening.

Instead, I’ve been driving myself crazy with paint colors for the living room.

The guys arrive!

The guys arrive!

I’ve finally had to admit to myself that I cannot come up with a great paint color design for the living room… I know that the light is different throughout the day and that it is a small room so I need lighter colors… but my ‘envisioning’ spidey sense is eluding me.  Basically, I know what I like once it has been chosen for me… but picking out colors myself… forgeddaboudit.

Hence, welcome to my day of $.99 color samples at Lowe’s.  The fact that all color samples were $.99 opened the door to major swatch paint meltdown mayhem!   Lowe’s is the closest store to the new house so I have to pass it on every single errand I run – What a perfect excuse to try a new color!

The biggest color issue here is that Hubby and I cannot agree on the main color.  I think it should be taupes or neutrals with red/pink undertones to work with the fireplace.  Hubby has his heart set on yellow.  Sunny yellow. Egg Yellow.  Mustard Yellow… it doesn’t matter.   He just wants yellow.

I keep trying to incorporate yellow… but then I get sidetracked and well… you know…

I keep buying the $.99 color samples at Lowe’s… I cannot help myself since I pass by Lowe’s on all of my errands! I want neutrals and Hubby wants YELLOW.

Here I’m trying browny/yellowy taupes and YELLOW!

The guys are all very nice.

Now remember, I had two fence companies not show up for our scheduled appointments. Since I was running out of time to have pastures for the horses, I asked the guys at the high-end (as high end as it gets here…) lumber store for their best recommendation on a fence guy.  That is how I found out about Juan.  And, he showed up early for our first appointment!  Bonus.

Anyway, Juan is doing this as a side job.  HIs main job is working for a fencing and landscaping company during the week.  I found out today that Juan is a foreman in the landscaping area and is branching out into fencing.

That’s fine.  He hired two of the fence guys from his weekday job, and they are here doing their best as well.  But, it is going more slowly than I had anticipated.  So far, the work that is done, is done very well.  Everything is straight and level.  And for that, I am thankful.

Piles are placed... time to start the big work.

I have been going outside every few hours (on my way to Lowe’s) to stroll around and pretend I’m taking photos.  I didn’t want to appear to breathe down their necks (well, yes I did, actually… but I didn’t want to ‘appear’ that way) so I would casually walk around and take pics or walk Kent’s foster dog (long story for another post).

This was one of the lumber guys delivering the materials. He was terrific with that huge trailer!

My first little load of hay. Prices are the same here. Bummer. Anyway, I have no where to store it so I put it here and hope that if I need to, I can cover it with a tarp for the time being.

My lesson on the different types of nail gun nails… another trip to Lowe’s.

The end of Day 1. We have post holes in all the right places.

This is Niles. He is Hubby’s foster dog from the Central Coast Herding Dog Rescue. Niles was horribly treated and is a psychological mess. Hubby wanted to help him. Niles has a few parasites and other ailments so the poor guy needs lots of help. Here I’m walking him. In two weeks, he has yet to wag his tail. Poor guy. And, he is sick, too… Hopefully, he will recover from all of his ordeals.  Hubby isn’t ready for a dog, but wanted to help.  We’ll see…

Here I am at the top of the larger pasture. I think the Mustangs will be in this pasture… they will have the best view!
