Is it appropriate to give a curfew to a grown horse?!

Tonight, I was flummoxed.

Our routine, for the last 18 months, has been that I go to the barn after dinner and tuck Mama Tess into her nighttime routine.

That means that MT is in her barn and she watches me as I provide her with the necessary four buckets of fresh food (soaked beet pulp, low carb senior feed, CoolStance and Renew Gold – all with hidden ingredients – meds/supplements –  that she knows are in there but humors me all the same).

Well, tonight, it was different.

One of the players was not on the field.

My flashlight caught the glint of her eye. She was laying in her favorite outside spot - under the stars.

My flashlight caught the glint of her eye.

SO, I WENT HUNTING FOR HER

I had a quick tinge of alarm when I entered the barn and saw that she wasn’t there… but I figured that she was simply ‘outside’.  I mean, the poor girl had been locked in the barn for a week while Mother Nature bawled her eyes out.  Today was the first dry day all week!  And, MT had taken advantage of the nicer weather and had spent most of the day outside.

In fact, at dinner time (4pm), she didn’t come in.  She stood in her favorite spot and tried to steal the other horses’ hay through the fence.

So, I fed her outside in her favorite spot.

Could she still be there – now?  But she always comes inside by now.  Always.  She has never, ever been outside when I have come to the barn to tuck her in.  Never.

I grabbed my flashlight and headed to her favorite spot.

She was peacefully sitting in her favorite outside spot, under the stars... like a healthy horse does.

I tried to entice her back into the barn with a bucket of beet pulp, but she declined. And, to be honest, I felt silly asking a grown horse to come inside because it was her bedtime. So, I left her to enjoy her evening while I readied the barn for her return.

OUR CONVERSATION

Me:  THERE YOU ARE!!  I was worried.

Tess (resting on the cool ground in the darkness)  Why?

Me:  ‘Why ‘is right… why are you out here and not in bed?

Tess:  Because I’m a horse.  This is where healthy horses sleep.  Under the stars.

I couldn’t argue with her logic.

Me (shaking her bucket):  Well… do you want your beet pulp?  C’mon in and get it.

Tess (looking sleepy and at peace):  Uh, I’m fine.  I was kindof meditating, in fact.

Me (feeling chagrin and silly):  Of course.  OK.  You are a big girl.  You do what you need to do.

And with that, I left.

I couldn't help myself... I gave her a handful of hay to round out her lovely evening. She was happy.

THE BARN IS READY FOR HER.

So, I went back to the barn and readied it like I always do.  I put out her fresh buckets with her assorted meds, fluffed up her bed and smiled to myself.

And, I did as I always do.  I called for all the Angels, Healers, Spirits, everyone I can think of that has passed and HorseGods to come down to this barn and heal this mare.  Sometimes I beg, sometimes I ask politely, sometimes I demand.  I figure someone, somewhere, sometime has to hear me…

I TOOK THIS PHOTO TONIGHT

I took this photo tonight to show you all how drenched Tess’ veranda had become due to all the rain.  I wanted to show you the clear divide between the inside dry part and the outside wet part.

But… that’s not what I see here.  I actually started weeping when I saw this.  Call me crazy, but I am choosing to believe that somebody has been listening…

Tess' veranda this evening.

CASLICK surgery for the OLDER MARE: No More Bladder Infections for Mama Tess!

OK, we are going to talk about horsey private parts and manure…  Just letting you know.  ;)

ACK!  MT HAS A BLADDER INFECTION!

Much to my horror, MT had a bladder infection very recently.

…Hopefully, none of you readers are cringing at the mere utterance of “B-L-A-D-D-E-R  I-N-F-E-C-T-I-O-N”.   Hopefully you haven’t had to endure the doubling-over pain associated (or that I associate) with bladder infections.  I hate bladder infections.

I could not believe that this poor girl had to endure such pain.  And, she was in pain because I could see it in her eyes, and she was sweating.  I knew something was up… and then I saw her urinate.  There was blood.  I ran to the phone.

Long story short, sulfur pills were dispensed immediately and she is much, much better.

But… I didn’t want it to happen again.

CASLICK SURGERY ISN’T JUST FOR PREGNANT MARES

Caslick surgery was invented by Dr. Caslick to prevent abortion or infection in pregnant mares with a flaccid/weak vaginal seal by sewing the uppermost part of the vulva to prevent wind-sucking or any other contaminants from getting into her vagina.

Here is a very nice article with graphic photos.

But, this idea can also work with an older mare whose conformation in that area has changed or tipped.  In older mares, or mares that have foaled often, they lose muscle tone which sucks the anus backwards.  Because of this ‘tucking in’ of the anus, these mares can eliminate INTO their vagina.

Now, this rarely happens because the vagina has a few chambers that keep the bad out (vulval seal) – but in some cases, those chambers are flaccid or injured or exposed.

So, the Caslick surgery can help by closing the area right under the anus.  They don’t suture the entire vulva shut – of course… only the top part that is directly in line with the sucked back anus.  They leave plenty of opening for normal urination.

This is not MT. But, you can see how this mare's anus is sucked back and her vulva is loose, which could allow for her to contaminate herself upon elimination.

BLADDER INFECTION GONE, SURGERY DONE.

The vet came out and carefully numbed the sensitive area.   MT was eating so she barely noticed.  Then, he cut a thin piece of tissue on either side of her vulva so the edges would be fresh and ready to heal together.

The rest was simple stitching.

Tess is resting comfortably.  I know she knows that it hurts a bit back there, but it isn’t keeping her from eating or sleeping.

I just checked on her tonight and she was fine.

For me, I am resting easier knowing that we’ve taken precautions so that MT won’t suffer another bladder infection during my watch.  To be fair, we don’t know exactly what caused this infection, but her conformation lends itself to self-contamination.  So, I feel like I was given a good warning – and it was time to be proactive so that she won’t have to suffer any more bladder infections.

When the vet left, I gave her a huge new pile of shavings and she immediately started pawing...

I gave MT a huge, new pile of shavings and she immediately started pawing… She was a bit tender but surgery hurt much less than the bladder infection!
