FLOYD MOORE OF 6J PAINT HORSES SHOW US DELTA FLYER (NCHA 1986 Super Stakes Cutting Champion) AND DELTA’S (NCHA Hall of Fame) FINAL RESTING PLACE ON THEIR BEAUTIFUL TEXAS RANCH.

Wow.  That was a long title for the video that I put together to show you today.

Remember how I told you all that my goal for 2013 was to learn how to edit in iMovie so I could bring to you the 1000s of hours of never aired footage from the HORSE & MAN television series.

Well, here it is only April of 2014, and I’ve finally edited my first tiny piece.  And, I must tell you, the task was fairly daunting… so much footage… I told myself to just pick one thing and put that one idea together.

So, that’s what I did.  I chose the Moore’s showing us the final resting spots for Delta and Delta Flyer on their incredible ranch in Texas.

Does that sound morbid?  Well, it wasn’t.  It was very tender.  That’s why I picked it.  But, I must tell you that the reason it never aired was because the segment was shot poorly.  However, the message is there…

But first, I need to tell you about my visit to 6J Paint Horses – the home of Floyd and Maryann Moore!

Here are Floyd and Maryann Moore. They were such delightful hosts – spent the entire day with us – and never a dull moment!  She was dressed perfectly for the day – elegant but still able to walk around the ranch.  He had his fine leathers on as well as his best buckle.  They were perfect!

You couldn’t imagine the beautiful sea of Paint horses – 400 of them! – on the 6J Paint Horses Ranch!

COWBOYS AND INDIANS MAGAZINE and A COLT NAMED ‘HALF A MILLION’

The H&M TV series was a real highlight in my life.  I was able to pick and choose whomever I wanted to interview, I’d pre-interview my subjects by phone, set up the shoots per State and then take a camera crew anywhere in the US that we needed to go.

Fu -un!

Well, how I came to interview the Moore’s was via COWBOYS AND INDIANS magazine.  C&I had written a story on Half a Million.

Half a Million was the name of the quarter horse colt whose owner had bid on and won the 500,000th AQHA registration number.  The Moore’s of 6J Paint Horses won the bidding and of course they named one of their colts “Half a Million”.

So, I read this and decided to learn about the Moores over the phone.

Wow!  They were delightful and when they told me that they had over 400 Paints of all ages  – and Floyd knew all of them on a first name basis – I knew I had to go visit!

This is the story of HALF A MILLION.

This is the story of HALF A MILLION.

MY VISIT

My visit was awesome!  I cannot even express the incredible ranch where 400 horses seemed like not a lot… in the scheme of things…

There were horses everywhere, but none were crowded.  Most of them were running in huge pastures.  You could determine their ages clearly simply by sizing up the group.  All of them were together either by age, sex, pregnant, stud, gelding, show or prepping for training.

The Ranch experience was truly memorable!  And, the Moores were more than gentile.  They had no issue bringing us into every pasture and answering every question of mine (and I had a lot!).

After spending an entire day on their ranch, if you can believe this, Floyd then took us 100 miles away to visit his studs at their training barn.

Incredible.

It was a day I will never forget.

Color, Color everywhere!

Interesting colored filly…

This was their Antebellum house. They had moved it from somewhere else to here. That is an entire other story…

These few were being prepped for training.

Floyd knew every single one of them. Every single one! He knew their breeding all the way back. He remembered their birth dates as well as dams and sires. Amazing. Clearly, breeding was his love.

There were friendly Paints EVERYWHERE… So curious and healthy.

Tad Griffith, Equine Stunt Trainer, speaks about Sonja Fitzpatrick, the Pet Psychic

Wednesday, June 12th, 2013 | Filed under Interviews

I ran out of time today… so I thought I would bring this blogpost to the forefront.  It was originally posted on April 6, 2010.

Anyway, a few years ago, HORSE AND MAN visited with Tad Griffith.  Tad is an incredible horseman.  He trains his string of movie horses for whatever they need to do:  Roman riding (Zorro), Westerns, Wild West Shows, Jumping through Rings of Fire, Riding at liberty…  His forte is Roman Riding and trick riding but he can do it all.  I remember being a bit afraid to visit Tad because I was hesitant to learn his training tactics.  Silly me… He is an animal lover and treats his charges with great respect.  He taught me so much.  Here is a list of some of his feature credits:

  • The Patriot
  • Shanghai Noon
  • Wild Wild West
  • Ride with the Devil
  • The Mask of Zorro
  • Adobe Station
  • The Magnificent Seven
  • Texas Payback
  • Jack of Hearts
  • Gambler III
  • Dream West
  • Gambler II
  • TBS “Movies for Guys Who Like Movies”
  • Eye on LA
  • Two on the Town

Ok so today, I found some raw footage of casual conversation between Tad and I that we happened to shoot. While reviewing it, I thought his comments on Sonja Fitzpatrick were memorable so I cut them together (to see the video, click here/quicktime)  Do you know about Sonja?  She had a show on Animal Planet called, THE PET PSYCHIC.  Sonja now has a radio show on Sirius.  Anyway, her producers picked Tad’s ranch for one of her episodes of THE PET PSYCHIC and I had heard about it before I interviewed Tad.

So, during my interview with Tad when I casually spoke with him about Sonja, he demurred.  He didn’t want to talk about it because I’m sure he thought I wouldn’t understand.  Or, he thought that he would sound silly for believing in Dr. Doolittle.  But, he had no fears here because I do believe in Dr. Doolittle.  (Gee, even admitting that to all of you makes me feel silly, too…)  C’mon in here closer and I’ll tell you —  to be honest, I was ready to not believe.  As a producer, I was wondering if Sonja’s show on Animal Planet was rigged or whatever.  Have you seen the movie LEAP OF FAITH with Debra Winger and Steve Martin?  Well, that movie had a huge impact on me.  It tells the story of a criminal evangelist that rigged his shows to fool unsuspecting believers out of their money.  So, I had to check it out for myself.  I called Sonja and set up a reading…  When Sonja was reading my animals, she had a tough nut to crack.  I was waiting to uncover the Steve Martin character from Leap of Faith.  But, I gotta tell you,  she was right on.  It was scary good.  I believe in Dr. Doolittle, too.

Anyway, back to Tad.  I asked him if he thought Sonja understood his animals, not letting him know that I knew about Sonja at all.  Tad got really quiet and smiled and told me it was the best horse day of his life…  He said he started as a skeptic and then became a believer.  The fun part about this is that Tad is not a woo-woo kinda guy as you will see.  And in the video, he gets excited to tell the stories of what his horses said! (embedded video, better quality for sure!)  Oh, the woman in the video (You Tube version) is his wife.  She was lovely, too.

So, watch the video (sorry about the poor editing on my part…) and then check out Sonja, if you’d like.  My reading was awesome and so was Tad’s.  Here is her website. (No affiliation with either Tad or Sonja)
