OH MYGOSH!! THE FIRST MINI MARE HAD A BABY – AND IT ISN’T LETHAL WHITE!! HALLELUJAH!

This is a mini mare from our September Bucket Fund drive for the horribly neglected, slipper footed, starved 49 mini horses.  22 of them were stallions.  12 of the very poorly mares are pregnant.  You can read their original story here!

She was one of the worst.  #527.  Here is her original intake image two weeks ago!  Just think, she was 2 weeks away from foaling…

Dr. Kris said, “This little mare is one I still worry about. Her intake photo doesn’t do her justice, as her body condition was 2/9 at intake. She was colicky on site when we got her, then resolved. She has had severe diarrhea which has finally resolved. This morning she was colicky again but by early afternoon was much more comfortable (with pharmaceutical help of course). On top of this, she is also pregnant. She has gained weight and diarrhea has stopped, but I worry that she may be headed toward aborting the foal. This is a sweet sweet mare, and is probably in her early 20s. She’s got the prettiest blue eyes too. I may be a little partial to her. “

WELL, AFTER 2 WEEKS OF EXTENSIVE CARE – SHE WAS ABLE TO DELIVER!!  – and not lethal white!

Clearly, since all the mares and studs have been tested for the gene, this mare was not impregnated by one of the surviving studs!  This baby has color!

In this pic, you can see how skinny she really is – even after 2 weeks of intensive care.

Dr Kris was astounded by this healthy baby! She said, “Mare is crampy but ok. Producing NO milk or colostrum initially, but with drugs is now producing some. Likely will have to give foal colostrum tomorrow. Placenta passed rapidly.
Foal is strong and feisty, and has passed meconium. Little filly. Nursing really well, in spite of nothing being there at first, so it took a while to catch on.”

AND THE LAST PHOTO OF THE DAY!

This baby will probably need colostrum and plasma, but SHE IS HERE!  And relatively healthy considering… And SO FANCY!!  Her color is awesome in many ways.  Such a great day for all!

Can you believe this awesome pose?! Mama and baby resting and happy. What a relief!!

HAVE A GREAT SUNDAY!

Thank you so much for sharing about these ponies/horses! I live in Texas and have been following the whole story. Do you have any idea which organization they will be adoptable from, because I’m pretty sure I’m going to need one. :)
