What is a Nurse Mare Foal?

So this topic may send some people into an uproar as nurse mare foals are a  by-product of another industry.  However, I am only writing this to comment on the foals and hopefully help these little guys have a life.  To me, if a human creates a foal, then it would be nice for a human to help it survive. All the other stuff, I’m not touching.

WHAT IS A NURSE MARE FOAL?

A nurse mare foal is the by-product of creating a nurse mare.  A nurse mare is an equine wet nurse.  Nurse mares are needed to nurse foals who’s natural mother has been taken away to be re-bred.  The newly orphaned “more valuable” foal is moved onto the nurse mare.  The original foal of the nurse mare is outta luck.

PEOPLE SAY…

People say that this doesn’t happen.  I think that argument would come as a surprise to the well established rescue facilities that take as many of these foals as they can afford — every foaling season.

2022 CROP OF NURSE MARE FOALS SAVED BY LAST CHANCE CORRAL

Last Chance Corral is a rescue in Ohio that specializes in Nurse Mare Foals.  They are set up to feed and house babies with special needs (no mothers…).  This is a huge and expensive endeavor.   They need help and I do love helping the most innocent survive.  These babies don’t ask to be born to be immediately discarded… So sad.

LET’S HELP LLC feed and care for these babies while they wait to be adopted!  Milk replacer, special feeds, plasma… all the medicines needed for babies is very costly, but vital.  Thank you in advance!

All donations are 100% tax deductible.  The Horse and Man Foundation is a 501c3 non-profit.

“Happy ending” born 4-23-22 bay paint filly (one of the twins) read about her and her brother in another post.
“Johnny Karate ” aka Wimpy born 4-21-22 Gaited black paint colt. He will be a smaller horse. When he first got here his little legs were going every which way like a tiny one man karate army. He was also a little angry with us and put up a stink about it. After a couple of warm bowls of milk he softened his stance on his new life. He may be a little smaller than his counterparts… but no one messes with Johnny Karate. Adoption fee 250
” Maureen O’Hara” born 4-23-22 Red filly. My guess is TB dad and a mixed mom. She would be a great match with her sister Scarlet. They have the same birthday and possibly the same dad. But she could go with another. Adoption fee 250
“Scarlet O’Hara” born 4-23-22 Red filly. Body and color match up with Maureen. Another tall well built cross breed. You can’t go wrong with these Irish gals. Adoption fee 250
“She’s a Knock-out” aka KO. She is super fancy, put together correctly, balanced and athletic with wonderful movement and a nice floaty trot. Great dressage prospect. She would pair well with “Marvel” . They are both going to be very tall. Adoption fee 500
“Marvel” dark bay or black filly born 4-7-22 trots. Mom is a big mixed gaited mare, dad is TB. She will be very dark, perhaps even black. She will be a tall mare well over 16HH. To adopt,  please email:   savefoals@lastchancecorral.org   or call Rebecca 352-322-5571Adoption fee:  $250 If you have been approved to adopt – IF YOU ARE PRE-APPROVED you may call Victoria740-594-4336 or Rebecca 352-322-5571

“Tomorrow” never dies. born 4-26-22 black gaited paint really nicely put together, an in-your-pocket type colt. He is just a sweetheart. He is looking for love and bonds quickly.
“Sarana” born 4-25-22 palomino paint filly she has minimal markings but surprise the end of her tail is golden!
