UPDATE, UPDATE, UPDATE!!!: A very generous and kind reader just sent in the remaining $395!! We made our goal!! Wahooooooo for this great program in CT and for these two beautiful mares! Thank you, Jennifer!!!!!
(To read the original story about these two BLM mares who were locked in a dark barn to starve to death… click here.)
We didn’t reach our goal (UPDATE: WE DID REACH OUR GOAL! THANK YOU, JENNIFER!) but we still did very well considering we only had a week to fund raise AND it was end of summer/back to school and a holiday weekend, to boot!
So, we did really well and Ray Connors (our contact for Chinook and Cheyenne) is very, very happy!
Here is his note to us:
They are truly very thankful for every dime that helps their comprehensive program continue. Not only do they rescue animals, but they house them and rehabilitate them here.
In addition – and this is great – in Connecticut, all animal abusers are prosecuted in Superior Court. AND all animal abuse cases are cross referenced with child abuse cases. Smart.
You can read about it here.
I HAD TO SEND A CHECK INSTEAD OF PAY PAL…
Unfortunately, the CT Dept of Agriculture doesn’t have a Pay Pal account to accept donations. They only take checks.
So, I had to transfer the money into my account and write a check from there.
THE GIRLS NOW!
Chinook and Cheyenne have had a few weeks to recover on their slow feeding diet and so far, so good!
The inmate say that their personalities are coming back, for sure!
Here is a quote from Ray:
My Officer said that Chinook is a sweetheart but starting to feel her increased energy. Cheyenne is working well with the inmates that handle her at our facility.
It is probably a good thing that they have each other because it is less stressful to recover with a friend…

The girls at Second Chance Large Animal Rehabilitation Center. It looks so happy and fresh compared to the awful dark barn with ankle high manure, dirty water and no food… Cheyenne is in front.

This is Chinook. Her intake weight was 575 lbs, she had a low temp, thrush, was lame, a discharge from both eyes, tested positive for Lyme Disease, was dehydrated and had sharp molars. She looks much better now! The inmates have taken great care of her.

This is Cheyenne. Her intake weight was 662 lbs. She had sharp teech, could not turn due to weakness in her back end, she could not walk well or go up the ramp to the trailer, her feet were very overgrown. She is much better now… I cannot imagine how happy they must feel to be FREE of that horrible situation.
